What is the Annual Giving Campaign?
The Annual Giving Campaign is Greater St. Louis Area Scouting’s yearly fundraising campaign that helps fund Scouting locally. It supports the programs, camps, training, and resources that benefit every Scout, while keeping Scouting affordable for families.
How is Scouting funded?
Scouting is supported through a balanced mix of revenue, including camping and activities, investments, United Way, product sales, and special events. Annual Giving makes up about 19% of that funding and plays a key role in covering costs that families don’t see.
How much does Scouting actually cost?
On average, it costs about $500 per Scout per year to operate the program. In Southern Illinois alone, that totals over $275,000 annually, not including offices, professional support, or camp facilities.
Many councils charge families additional program fees, often up to $180 per Scout. Because of community support and responsible budgeting, our council does not charge those extra fees, helping keep Scouting accessible to more families.
What does my gift support?
Your Annual Giving contribution helps provide:
· Program and membership support (advancement, training, recognition, recruitment)
· Financial assistance (membership financial assistance, camp scholarships, registration help)
· Camp and facility support (safe, well-maintained camps and program areas)
· Technology and communication (websites, calendars, customer service)
· Professional and volunteer support for units at the district and council level
Does my donation stay local?
Yes. While gifts are managed at the council level to ensure stability, for every $1 raised, $3–$5 is reinvested back into district programs and operations. Your support directly strengthens Scouting here in Southern Illinois.
Is my gift tax deductible?
Yes. The Greater St. Louis Area Council – Scouting America is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, and all contributions are fully tax deductible. Many employers also offer matching gifts, which can double your impact.
